sloan turns twenty with 'the double cross'

Share

As we mentioned a few months back, Canadian rock stalwarts Sloan are on the verge of twenty years and ten albums together.

The Double Cross comes out in two weeks, but Chris Murphy, Patrick Pentland, Jay Ferguson and Andrew Scott have been dissecting the album on the band's youtube channel for those of us who care. Per usual, all four guys split up the songwriting - which contributes to the eclectic nature of their sound and the occasional misguided Beatles comparisons.

Have a bit of a preview here, as we match up the commentary with the appropriate track. You'll notice several mentions of 1996's One Chord To Another, which bodes well for the new album. Here's Chris and "Follow The Leader":

Get the idea? Now here's Patrick and "Unkind":

Now Chris is back again for "Shadow Of Love":

Unfortunately, soft spoken Jay gets the shaft here... but here's drummer Andrew — who always seems to write my favorite Sloan songs, like "People Of The Sky" — with his take on "She's Slowin' Down Again":

Not bad for a bunch of old Canadians, eh? The Double Cross is out May 10 on Yep Roc.

hooray for earth 'true loves' video

Share

Brooklyn electropop act and onetime Twin Shadow collaborator Hooray For Earth is set to release debut album True Loves June 7.

This week, a video for the title track was posted, featuring plenty of middle earth mysticism. "True Loves" gives you a pretty good idea of Hooray For Earth's percussion heavy synthpop:

"True Loves" is available as a single on iTunes with a half dozen remixes thrown in. Here's the Cereal Spiller Remix, which gives it a more traditional dance floor thump:

'sadness is a blessing' lykke li video

Share

Directed by Tarik Saleh and starring veteran character actor Stellan Skarsgård, Lykke Li's latest video for "Sadness Is A Blessing" is an uncomfortable watch. Saleh lets the tension of a dinner date gone horribly wrong for a good 1:53 before the music kicks in. Have a look:

If the setting was a Chili's, that would encapsulate my dating life.

ford & lopatin x-ray 'emergency room' single

Share

The duo formerly known as Games, Ford & Lopatin, will release their debut Channel Pressure June 6 on Mexican Summer.

As a teaser, they've pressed a limited run of x-ray picture discs featuring the single "Emergency Room." The album version is on the a-side, while a dub version mixed by The Bug and this version — remixed by former LCD Soundsystem member Gavin Rossum — comprise the b-side:

(via onethirtybpm)

As you can tell from the album version, these guys drink copiously from the font of 80's synthpop:

Pretty tasty if you ask me.

cut copy 'need you now' remix trifecta

Share

Australia's Cut Copy recently wrapped up the first leg of a North American tour. Today, they issued a yet another remix of "Need You Now," the lead single off Zonoscope.

The Gavin Russom Remix takes the already midtempo jam and gives it a more chill, thoughtful spin:

If you think that was slow, check out the remix produced by fellow Aussies Architecture In Helsinki. It turns "Need You Now" into a Roy Orbison style epic ballad:

To end on a high, here's the Carl Craig Remix — which is basically the extended dance floor mix...  or the version that would have appeared on In Ghost Colours:

holy ghost dad! - 'wait and see' video

Share

NYC electropop duo Holy Ghost! are coming off a tour with Cut Copy and released their debut album earlier this month. Now the duo of Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel are sharing in their success with their fathers.

In the new video for "Wait And See," the dads — who have taken pretty good care of themselves if I may say so — guest star as their sons. It's played straight, but it's very Vice Versa in concept:

While we're here, Holy Ghost! are no stranger to special guests. If you hadn't heard, they got THE Michael McDonald to provide backing vocals on album closer "Some Children":

Glad to see those Holy Ghost! kids respect their elders. Fine young men.

the prodigy 'world's on fire' concert film

Share

Remember when electronica was going to take over the world? For you youngins, way back in 1997 everything we knew about music was about to change with the release of The Prodigy's Fat Of The Land.

While that album was massive — debuted at #1 in the US and sold 2 million copies — it didn't quite kick off an electronic movement. If anything, it spawned retaliatory rap-rock.

Now, 14 years on, The Prodigy are back with a live album and DVD that wants to finish what they started. World's On Fire, out May 23, compiles live footage from the Invaders Must Die tour — particularly from their Warrior's Dance Festival at Milton Keynes Bowl last July.

Having seen Liam, Keith and Maxim at Coachella in 2005, I can attest that they put on one of the loudest, most intense live shows you'll ever see. Check out the official trailer for a taste:

And here's the brand new teaser trailer that leaves a little more to the imagination:

The Prodigy have a few overseas festival dates booked this summer, but nothing in the states as of yet. World's On Fire might be your best chance to get your face melted.

Just for grins, here are "Breathe" from FOTL and "Take Me To The Hospital" from Invaders...  enjoy:

cat's eyes 'I'm not stupid' live studio performance

Share

The Horrors frontman Faris Badwan is paired with classically trained Canadian musician Rachel Zeffira in his new project, Cat's Eyes.

The duo's self titled debut is just released in the states, but it's already making waves in the UK. Badwan and Zeffira recently stopped by the studio at Guardian UK for a tender, heartbreaking performance of "I'm Not Stupid":

If you wonder why Zeffira has such a complex, just listen to Badwan in current single "Face In The Crowd":

And I can't have a Cat's Eyes post without referencing their December performance at the Vatican of "I Knew It Was Over":

Beautiful.

the wombats new album, not techno fans

Share

Liverpool's The Wombats return with album number two today, This Modern Glitch. As the couple of EPs released leading up the album — Jump Into The Fog and Anti D — indicated, this is quite a departure from the schoolboy punk of 2008's A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation.

While the lads who loved that album might be disappointed, The Wombats are reaching for a wider audience. Frontman Matthew Murphy has embraced his Korg and the band are going for bigger choruses and thicker hooks.

Murphy can still turn a phrase, as you'll note in the video for "Techno Fan," but the sweet backing vocals and soaring keyboards overpower his prose:

Murphy has revealed a prescription pill addiction that shaped much of the record. In "Our Perfect Disease" he hints at why he may have started popping pills in the first place:

Women. Who needs them. Am I right, guys?

Catch The Wombats on tour this summer.. hopefully more US dates are on the way.

magic! epic new clams casino video

Share

Clams Casino? Isn't that a clam on the half shell with breadcrumbs and bacon?

Why yes, it is — but it's also the name of New Jersey based producer Michael Volpe, who will release a debut EP, Rainforest, on Tri Angle Records June 27. He's best known for creating tracks and beats for hip hop artists, but as you'll see in the video below, the dude can set a mood.

"Gorilla" is wobbly and fuzzed out like so much chillwave, but it's got a sinister edge that works hilariously well with this Jamey Harley directed montage of David Copperfield's finest hour:

(via gorillavsbear)

If you want more, and you can't wait until June, Clams Casino has a free instrumental mixtape that highlights some of his hip hop production work, sans vocals. Thanks stereogum for that one.

Thank God David Copperfield is safe. He takes so many unnecessary risks.

sick video for salem's 'sick'

Share

And by 'sick' I mean either badass or disturbing — depending on your point of view.

I fall more in the 'disturbing' camp. Watching this video makes me consider the inevitable crumbling of our society.

But then Salem are all about shock value. I think they're as much into ghetto thuggery as Slayer was into satan. Whether it's an act or not, it sure as hell is a creepy video:

If you're not too unsettled, check out Salem's witch-housey remix of Interpol's "Try It On."  I'm going to pray for us.

depeche mode 'puppets' röyksopp remix

Share

Depeche Mode's Remixes 2: 81-11 doesn't arrive until June 6, but plenty of tracks have been floated out there over the past month.

Two remixes of "Personal Jesus" — one by Alec Metric and another entitled "Stargate Remix" — plus the Eric Prydz remix of "Never Let Me Down Again" have been streamed on the Depeche Mode facebook page.

In our original post on the subject, we dug up streams of Unkle's "John The Revelator," the Oliver Huntemann & Stephan Bodzin Dub of "Everything Counts," and the sweet M83 rework of "Suffer Well."

If the latter was a rework, the latest peek at the remix collection is a total re-do. Norwegian dance duo Röyksopp have taken on "Puppets" from 1981's Speak And Spell:

Compare that to the relatively tinny '81 version:

Speaking of 1981, just a reminder that Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder contribute remixes to this project. See the full tracklist below:

'a chore' - new video from tom vek

Share

If you're like me, you may not know who Tom Vek is. Turns out, he's kind of the English version of Beck. Apologies for the broad comparison, but he is a singer/songwriter multi-instrumentalist with a genre spanning sound and a knack for a good beat.

He's been off the map since his 2005 debut, We Have Sound, but the UK music press has been buzzing about his rumored return.

Well, it's rumored no more. Leisure Seizure will be released June 6 via Island Records. It's highly anticipated over there, but here we're just catching on. He recently debuted lead single "A Chore" on Zane Lowe, and now said single has a clever Ollie Evans directed video:

Encouraging discovery in my book. Here's the full tracklist for Leisure Seizure:
  1. Hold Your Hand
  2. Aroused
  3. A Chore
  4. We Do Nothing
  5. World of Doubt
  6. Seizemic
  7. A.P.O.L.O.G.Y

flaming lips gummy skull tracks

Share

That Wayne Coyne is one crazy sumbitch. Last month, he hand-delivered a 12" of acid jams recorded with Neon Indian to record stores in Oklahoma City and Dallas. Yesterday, he made the same trip — with a stop in Austin thrown in — to present these:

Gummy skulls. Yes, they are edible. And yes, those are vaginas on top.

Buried inside the skulls is a USB featuring four new Flaming Lips songs. I don't want to know how you get it out.

Anyway, the tunes themselves are less experimental than the Neon Indian collaboration, but still pretty bizarre — along the lines of Embryonic. Here they are, beginning with "Drug Chart":

"In Our Bodies Out Of Our Heads":

"Walk With Me":

"Hillary's Time Machine":

For more photos of the gummy skulls, and to see what Coyne might be up to next, follow his Twitter page.

morrissey 'glamorous glue' b-side rarities

Share

Morrissey has yet another best-of collection coming out next week, and yesterday he re-released Your Arsenal (pity about that Tottenham comeback today) single "Glamorous Glue."

The single was originally released in the US, but never in the UK. This time, it was made available in several formats — a 7" picture disc, 7" single, CD single and digital single — each with its own bonus material.

Of the most interest are the b-sides of the vinyl singles, which are previously unreleased Viva Hate demos. On the flip side of the picture disc is the perfectly titled "Treat Me Like A Human Being":

"Safe, Warm Lancashire Home" is the b-side on the other 7":

And if you don't quite remember "Glamorous Glue," here's the video for the Alain Whyte/Boz Boorer dueling guitar stomp:

Those sessions have been happening over in Helsinki, Finland. Must be nice.

watch cat's eyes 'face in the crowd'

Share

The Horrors have confirmed three UK festival dates this summer and are finishing up their third album. In the meantime, frontman Faris Badwan is touring with his new project, Cat's Eyes.

Paired with classically trained Canadian musician Rachel Zeffira, Badwan gets to show a softer side — if still dark and mysterious.

The duo's self titled debut was released in the UK last week, but won't arrive in the states until May 17. Badwan hesitates to call it goth, but it is at times brooding and atmospheric. Take the most recent single "Face In The Crowd":

However, as a December performance at the Vatican shows, Cat's Eyes can be beautiful — even emotionally powerful:

While the album version of "I Knew It Was Over" doesn't quite pack the punch of that performance, there are moments of heartbreaking brilliance like "The Best Person I Know":

If you want to hear more, look for the free mp3 link on the band's website for a copy of "Not A Friend." Nice one, Faris.

It's entitled the "Back to '89 Rave Montage" — so all you kids can see how ridiculous we looked back in the day:

I know you don't want to believe it, but you're going to get old one day and people will laugh at what you used to look like. It's the circle of life.

Greene is also known as Washed Out, the project that got the whole woozy lo-fi synthpop thing started with EPs Life Of Leisure and High Times.

Sub Pop will release debut album Within And Without on July 12, featuring "You And I" — a collaboration with Chairlift's Caroline Polachek that appeared on Adult Swim's Singles Program:

Full disclosure, I love Washed Out. When my child was born, I dorked out and cut a family slideshow to "New Theory" — so count me among those excited by this news.

new brian eno single 'glitch'

Ambient pioneer Brian Eno will release his 42nd studio album July 5 on Warp Records. Last year's Small Craft On A Milk Sea was well received, so there's a bit of anticipation to see what Eno has planned next.

Turns out it's a collaboration of sorts with poet Rick Holland, whom Eno has dabbled with over the past 20 years or so.

Drums Between The Bells features Holland's words with Eno's signature soundscapes. For an idea of where this one's headed, here's a stream of the 'single' entitled "Glitch":

The album will be issued in all the usual formats, with the addition of a hardback 2CD edition:

Here's the full tracklist, including the obligatory "silence":

young galaxy and you say party cover madonna

Share

Paper Bag Records has a late addition to the Record Store Day fray. True Blue is, as you might expect, a compilation of Madonna covers. In fact, it's a complete, in-sequence recreation of the queen of pop's 1986 classic of the same name.

You can download it free here if you don't mind giving up your email, or you can stream it here.

It's all well done, but there are a couple of highlights. Young Galaxy has one of our favorite releases of 2011 so far, and the Montreal band do a terrific minimalist version of the buoyant smash hit "Open Your Heart":

Another standout is "Love Makes The World Go Round," a "deep" cut by You Say Party:

On the subject of You Say Party, some sad news. Seems they've called it a day:

"Becky, Derek and I are announcing the immediate cease to activity as YSP. Call it a hiatus. Call it a break. Call it whatever you want.

It’s been a hard year for us. Not a bad year. We’ve experienced wonderful support from people. But you gotta listen to your body and your mind when it begins to revolt against what you think it is you have to do. So we’re gonna stop for a while, and we’re gonna work on who we are as people.

We know that everyone understands exactly why and where we’re coming from. Thanks for the support over the years."

On that bittersweet note, here's the rest of the tracklist for the True Blue comp:
  1. Woodhands – Papa Don’t Preach
  2. Young Galaxy – Open Your Heart
  3. The Acorn – White Heat
  4. The Rural Alberta Advantage (We’re Scared Version) – Live To Tell
  5. PS I Love You – Where’s The Party
  6. Winter Gloves – True Blue
  7. Laura Barrett – La Isla Bonita
  8. Born Ruffians – Jimmy Jimmy
  9. You Say Party – Love Makes The World Go Round

And we found a rip of Interpol's full set. Thanks to youtuber hoynosvamosjuntos, you can watch the 11-song set in three parts.. enjoy:

the death of the stills

Share

New York via Montreal rock band The Stills have announced their parting of ways.

CoS points out the statement released by the band today. It reads, in part:

"After the better part of a decade together, several months ago we sat down and decided to disband The Stills and part ways. Simply put, The Stills have broken up.
...We spent the better part of the last year trying to keep it going for each other, out of love for one another and out of respect for our long past together. But ultimately, the best decision for each one of us, and in order for each of us to live fully, creatively, and freely, being true to our hearts, this had to happen...

And now our music and what it means rests in your hands. It belongs fully to the world out there, and especially to you. Make it all you wish it to be, in whichever way you most want to.

May your lives be filled with joy and happiness,

The Stills"

Certainly maudlin, but also extremely heartfelt. I remember being blown away by these guys at SXSW during a day show at Emo's so many years ago. That first album holds up for me, as a desperately-clinging-to-the-past old waver.

While they ultimately strayed from the sound that made me love them so much at first, I'll pour out a Molson today in their honor.

radiohead record store day release leaked

Share

So this is as close as we're going to get to The King Of Limbs 2. A couple of leftovers — "The Butcher" and "Supercollider" — are being released as a 12" single in the UK, Europe and Japan for Record Store Day tomorrow.

Earlier in the week, Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien told the BBC:

"'The Butcher' is from the King Of Limbs sessions. 'Supercollider' was recorded during that period and finished off after the album came out. There are songs that we have started, that we never finished, but there's not like seven or eight finished songs waiting in the wings to be released now, or in the autumn, or something."

The good news is, we've got updated high quality rips, thanks to ianbhoy. "Supercollider" is the brighter of the two and has been known to make its way into setlists on occasion:

"The Butcher" is more percussive and sounds like a late edit from TKOL:

Truth be told, only a Radiohead completist will be hell bent on finding this. It's probably for the best that this is all that's left from those sessions. As O'Brien said, "When we start a new record, we tend to start afresh. It's kind of an evolutionary thing - only the fittest survive."

UPDATE:

Thanks to SKoA for the heads up...  the "Supercollider"/"The Butcher" 12" will get a US release June 14. As for the Record Store Day version, it's got the labels on backward due to "unforeseen circumstances that we didn't foresee."

Uh oh...  collector's item alert.
