Odds are, Toro Y Moi's Underneath The Pine will end up on plenty of year-end lists. But Chaz Bundick isn't done.. in fact he's got an EP coming out in September on Carpark.
Today "Saturday Love" was released as a teaser for Freaking Out. It continues the late 70's flavor of Underneath The Pine with a bit more of Bundick's previous DIY aesthetic:
If you dig that, download it for an email address below. And while you're here, go ahead and check out the remix of Cut Copy's "Blink And You'll Miss A Revolution" from Toro Y Moi that will appear in a remix bundle and on a 12" later this month:
Cut Copy, currently doing some dates in their Australian homeland, have a little label on the side, Cutters Records. Its latest release is a 5-song remix EP from Miracles Club, featuring two versions of "Too Cold" and three takes on "Light Of Love" — one of which was "revised" by Cut Copy themselves.
It's not too dissimilar from the original, but it adds just a touch of the depth and grandeur that make Cut Copy so great:
Australia's Cut Copy recently wrapped up the first leg of a North American tour. Today, they issued a yet another remix of "Need You Now," the lead single off Zonoscope.
The Gavin Russom Remix takes the already midtempo jam and gives it a more chill, thoughtful spin:
If you think that was slow, check out the remix produced by fellow Aussies Architecture In Helsinki. It turns "Need You Now" into a Roy Orbison style epic ballad:
To end on a high, here's the Carl Craig Remix — which is basically the extended dance floor mix... or the version that would have appeared on In Ghost Colours:
Cut Copy are currently on the North American leg of their Zonoscope tour. If you're curious about the live experience, you're in luck.
Swedish TV show Klubbland recently featured the Aussie synthpop sensations. In the video below, via pitchfork, you can see Dan Whitford and the guys fight the doldrums by seeking out a good cup of coffee and some vintage vinyl.
But what you really want to see starts at 4:18. The band blows the roof off with live performances of "Take Me Over," "Hearts On Fire" and "Lights And Music":
Today, they've issued a fabulous remix of "Need You Now" off recently released third album Zonoscope. Produced by fellow Aussies Architecture In Helsinki, it reimagines the slow percolating track into an even slower epic ballad in the style of Roy Orbison:
Download the remix here. For reference, here's the silly Jock Jams video for the album version:
Cut Copy will be touring the US with excellent NYC dance scholars Holy Ghost!, so get your tickets now as many shows have already sold out.
If you haven't yet picked up Cut Copy's third full length, Zonoscope, it's well worth your trouble. A slow burn compared to the often euphoric In Ghost Colours, it's a headphones album that invites exploration of the many layers and textures woven throughout. Check out our assessment here.
Today, Stereogum premiered the video for Zonoscope's opener, "Need You Now." I never thought of Cut Copy as a Jock Jams contender, but this video ponders the possibility of athletes of all stripes charging into competition to the sweet strains of synthpop.
As the video progresses, sports confusion adds to the absurdity: a baseball pitcher with a bowling ball, a hockey player with a tennis racket, etc. Finally, these figurative warriors take the term literally and a melee breaks out.
A limp ending somewhat spoils the fun, but it's amusing enough. Oh, and speaking of limp.. watch out for flying junk at :36.
It's not due for release in the states until February 8, but the highly anticipated 3rd album from Aussie synthpop gods Cut Copy, Zonoscope, has sprung a leak.
While the preview singles hinted at a significant departure from the pulsating gloriousness of In Ghost Colours, a quick listen of Zonoscope reveals a bit of bait and switch. It is a more down tempo album with stylistic nods to krautrock, however it does maintain Cut Copy's trademark electronic textures and slow sonic builds.
The track that probably would be most at home on In Ghost Colours is "Pharaohs & Pyramids":
Certainly no "Hearts On Fire", "Hanging Onto Every Heartbeat" does have a sweet and insistent chorus:
"Blink And You'll Miss A Revolution" is maybe a little too heavy on the falsetto, but it's got the album's funkiest bassline:
The most varied track, and my early favorite, is the Kraftwerk inspired "Corner Of The Sky":
Cut Copy are about to embark on a world tour in support of Zonoscope, including stops at Miami's Ultra Music Festival and Coachella.
Now with three exceptional albums to cull material and a presumably more high budget light show, Cut Copy's already fantastic live show will be unstoppable. Buy your tickets now or regret it later.
"Take Me Over" is a step away from the club-ready jams of the last album, but they've taken that into account and floated a free remix from the co-producer of In Ghost Colours, Tim Goldsworthy.
Goldsworthy, late of DFA, turned the krautrock of the original into the ten-minute, cow-bell crescendo of "Take Me Over (Thee Loving Hand Remix)":
For reference, here's the more pedestrian original:
Look for Zonoscope in the US on February 8 via Modular.
Australian synthpop maestros Cut Copy are set to release the follow up to In Ghost Colours early next year.
Zonoscope will be Cut Copy's third full length, and if early returns are correct it appears to find a happy medium between the grandeur of In Ghost Colours and the krautrock of Bright Like Neon Love.
Lead single "Take Me Over" gets a digital release today with a vinyl 12" to come in the near future. It has a nice break around 2:49, but doesn't reach for the heights of say "Lights And Music":
For another peek at Zonoscope, check out "Where I'm Going" which was released over the summer:
And if that's not enough Cut Copy for you today, let's go back to a b-side on the 2008 "Far Away" EP.
"Sands Of Time" was written after In Ghost Colours but would have fit in nicely. This fan-made video of sand art (get it?) is pretty danged amazing:
