Sunday is a big day for fans of Coldplay. The "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" EP will be released on iTunes, featuring the title track, "Major Minus" and "Moving To Mars."

The first b-side has the sensitive Coldplay lads stripping off their shirts, flexing their pecs and pulling on their U2 pants:

"Moving To Mars" begins like a standard Chris Martin piano ballad, then gets all proggy about halfway through:

Ready or not, Coldplay are back with another radio-ready, soon-to-be-omnipresent single. "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" is out digitally most everywhere today, and will be released in the UK this Sunday.

From the band's ongoing sessions with producer Brian Eno, the track features a slick keyboard buildup, some trademark Chris Martin couplets (maybe I'm in the black, maybe I'm on my knees / maybe I'm in the gap between the two trapezes), and plenty of Edge-esque guitars:




Now maybe that melody sounds somewhat familiar. Perhaps to get out in front of any potential litigation, Coldplay have confirmed to NME that "Every Tear Is A Waterfall" has more than a little bit in common with Australian singer Peter Allen's 1976 hit "I Go To Rio":




I take several things away from that video. Yes, that is same melody. Peter Allen was terrible at lip syncing. And he had his shirt tied up like a chick.

Oh, and 1:24 to 1:31 make me very uncomfortable.

Chris Martin and company issued their contribution to the Christmas canon earlier this month. "Christmas Lights" was released as a single and quickly followed by an equally cheerful video.

This past Sunday night in Liverpool, Coldplay whipped the tune out for the first time live. Featuring Take That's Gary Barlow, it turns into quite the arm waving sing-along:



Unfortunately, Coldplay's treacle sweet single didn't even make the top 10 in the race for the UK's Christmas #1. That honor goes to X-Factor winner Matt Cardle and his cover of "When We Collide" by Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro.

Yeesh.

'Tis the season for second rate Christmas Carols. Despite the fact that we already have more than enough Christmas music to get us through the holidays, every year we're presented a new batch of cornball covers and cringe-worthy originals.

For the 5th year in a row, The Killers have penned a modern holiday hymn to benefit the (RED) Foundation.

In the Jared Hess directed video for "Boots", a homeless man finds the Christmas spirit just in time to drag his sorry ass back to the family he abandoned:




Not to be outdone, Coldplay has issued "Christmas Lights" — a more overtly Christmassy tune with a more festive video and a freshly shorn Chris Martin:



The Coldplay carol probably has the better chance of making it into the mall muzak rotation next Christmas. Beats Mannheim Steamroller I guess.
