The Stone Roses self titled debut celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. An old waver desert island disc if there ever was one, it's a somber reminder of what might have been.


But a three year legal battle with Silvertone, John Squire's increasing fascination with the blues and the proliferation of grunge euthanized the biggest band in the world before it could fulfill its promise.

Maybe it's better this way. Like James Dean or Jimi Hendrix, dying young gave The Stone Roses mythic status that would have eroded with age and mediocrity.

So take a look back at some classic live performances from Blackpool in 1989 to warm your heart on a chilly December Monday. If you close your eyes, you can almost see Ian's Mersey Paradise:
