Peter Murphy will release his first new album in seven years on June 7. Ninth is a grittier album than most of Murphy's solo work. Perhaps he's come to fully embrace his mythical role as the godfather of goth.

Murphy and label Nettwerk have been systematically leaking tracks from the album, with the latest being the rollicking "Seesaw Sway." Unusual for its backing vocals, it's an interesting turn for the almost 54-year-old:

Peter Murphy is currently on the road, ahead of the June release of Ninth — the godfather of goth's eighth full-length release. Something isn't adding up here.

Regardless, this week saw the release of the lead single off the album, "I Spit Roses." His sound is still somewhat dreary and mysterious, but it's also a bit ballsier with more gritty guitars:




The b-side, "The Prince & Old Lady Shade" is the brighter and more anthemic of the two. Perhaps the single should have been flipped:




This old waver had the pleasure of seeing Murphy live on the current tour. I'm happy to report that he's still got it — not his hair, but his chops — and at least on that night he was in surprisingly good spirits.

Blasphemy. That's what I'm about to utter. I've always enjoyed Peter Murphy's solo work and Love and Rockets more than Bauhaus. There, I said it.

Certainly Bauhaus is more important. No argument there. But if I'm going to throw something on, I'm reaching for Deep or Earth, Sun, Moon before "Bela Lugosi's Dead."

Therefore — and just because — here's a triple shot of Love and Rockets to push you through to the weekend. We'll tackle Peter Murphy another day.

japan's mick karn dead at 52

Mick Karn, bassist for British synthpop pioneers Japan, passed away today at his London home.

In a statement from his website:

"It's with profound sadness that we have to inform you that Mick finally lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at 4.30pm today, 4th January 2011 at home in Chelsea, London. He was surrounded by his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all."

In addition to his trendsetting work with Japan, Karn also partnered with Peter Murphy in Dalis Car. Last fall, Murphy announced work had begun on a second Dalis Car album, more than 25 years after The Waking Hour.

John Taylor took a moment today on Duran Duran's blog to cite Karn and Japan as formative influences. Listen to "Quiet Life" and you'll understand why:
