preteen zenith — new polyphonic spree project

Share

Coming up on July 23 at the historic Granada Theater in Dallas, preeminent indie blog gorillavsbear will curate its very own festival. Details are still sketchy, but one thing is for sure — Tim DeLaughter of The Polyphonic Spree will debut his new project.

DeLaughter tells dc9atnight the band is called Preteen Zenith, and will also feature Philip Karnats of The Secret Machines and drummer Jason Garner, formerly of The Paper Chase and The Polyphonic Spree.

If all you know of DeLaughter are the white robes and sing-along choruses of the Spree, he and Karnats were in a band before that called Tripping Daisy. They had a run at college rock stardom in the early 90's with "I Got A Girl," but turned much more experimental with their last two albums, Jesus Hits Like The Atom Bomb and the self-titled record released after the death of guitarist Wes Berggren.

Who knows if Preteen Zenith will sound anything like Tripping Daisy, but for a refresher, here are some standouts from those final efforts. From Jesus Hits Like The Atom Bomb, "Waited A Light Year":

And a couple from the underrated Tripping Daisy, "Foot Dance" and "Tragiverse":

Looking forward to it.
