new order's 'subculture' covered by a pet shop boy
The quiet one, Chris Lowe, has taken a break from the Pet Shop Boys — who recently released a ballet score — to record a cover version of a New Order classic.
Thanks to slicingupeyeballs for the heads up. It seems Lowe stepped out from behind the keyboards to lay down a vocal for Stop Modernists, the duo of Finnish DJ/producers Jori Hulkkonen and Alex Nieminen.
The result is what you'd expect if the Pet Shop Boys covered "Subculture" — except instead of Neil Tenant's nasal delivery, we hear the heavily effected voice of Lowe:
Really, not bad. But it makes me long to hear the original, so here's a live version from the '85 concert film Pumped Full of Drugs — filmed in Japan just before Low Life came out:
The Stop Modernists version will be released as a single June 16.
