the stone roses reunite! or maybe not.

It's the hot rumor, or rumour, of the day in the UK. First The Sun and then NME have run with stories confirming — at the very least — a thawing of the embittered relationship between Ian Brown and John Squire.

The Stone Roses split in 1996, following a protracted legal battle with Silvertone. Brown and Squire hadn't spoken since, but according to Clint Boon, former keyboardist for Inspiral Carpets, the two recently buried the hatchet. He tweeted:

"It's true that Ian & John met recently. It was at Mani's mum's funeral. We all went back to a pub in Failsworth. Ian & John got on great ..."

Another source tells The Sun "they've been in regular contact since."

So while there's no official word, the speculation is that a reunion tour is imminent. We've heard this before, with Coachella rumors flying a few years ago, but this appears more likely.

Bassist Gary "Mani" Mournfield, currently a member of Primal Scream, has always been hopeful a reunion would take place, but drummer Alan "Reni" Wren has dropped out of the public eye and could require some arm twisting.

If it does happen, it would be massive. Perhaps the Roses are better left to legend, but I'd love a chance to witness this for myself:

UPDATE:

The story has been squashed, at least for now, as Mani has told NME:

"I'm disgusted that my personal grief has been invaded and hijacked by these nonsensical stories. Two old friends meeting up after 15 years to pay their respects to my mother does not constitute the reformation of The Stone Roses. Please fuck off and leave it alone. It isn't true and isn't happening."
